NEWS BRIEF

The treaty for cross-border law enforcement cooperation was signed by Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina and French Minister of Overseas Territories Naïma Moutchou. This agreement allows maritime “hot pursuit” during anti-drug operations in the waters surrounding Sint Maarten and Saint Martin.

The signing took place at a police station in Cole Bay, attended by officials including Governor Ajamu Baly and Minister Nathalie Tackling. It establishes a legal framework for law enforcement vessels from both sides to chase suspected smugglers across maritime boundaries and enhances operational cooperation through intelligence sharing.

Justice Minister Tackling highlighted the historic cooperation between the French and Dutch communities since the 1648 Treaty of Concordia. She emphasized the treaty closes gaps exploited by organized crime crossing jurisdictions. Captain Randy Paskel noted it addresses challenges faced by the Coast Guard during anti-trafficking efforts.

Prime Minister Mercelina reaffirmed that the agreement signifies mutual trust and shared responsibility for combating transnational crime. He urged the necessity of cooperation for safeguarding communities.

The treaty is designed to improve maritime security, especially given the Caribbean’s role as a narcotics transit route, allowing uninterrupted pursuit of smugglers. Justice Minister Tackling also discussed broader justice cooperation, including prison infrastructure reforms.

The signing concluded with a ceremonial toast, underscoring that collaboration is essential for both jurisdictions facing shared challenges.
